2009 West Islip High School
Varsity Girls Soccer
Bleak and dreary
were the words used to forecast the upcoming West Islip Girls Varsity
Soccer season. Getting into the playoffs was looked upon as only a
dream. Having 17 seniors graduate from the previous Suffolk County
finalist team and with only 4 starters returning, people appeared
justified in writing off the W.I.G.S. (West Islip Girls Soccer) pending
season. Upon losing their first game to Centereach, despair was now setting in. However, the girls of this team failed to acknowledge the disaster predicted by the overwhelming majority of the school, parents and league. It started with wins against Hauppauge and Islip, confidence was never an issue with these young ladies, they all felt they could win if they could just come together as a team, but it was apparent the confidence in themselves began grow and flourish with these 2 wins. Each and every game from that point on was looked upon as winnable. Although there were some bumps in the road along the way, what people failed to realize was this team was playing in now what some believe to be the toughest league on the island, if not the state. Even when losing, THE TEAM showed great resiliency in each following game. Injuries plagued this team as they did with every team, but new faces were stepping in and filling the voids without missing a beat. THE TEAM coasted into the county playoffs (to everyone’s surprise except their own) as the 6th seeded team and easily defeated Lindenhurst in the first round 3-0. Although they were looking forward to “pay back” with East Islip in the next round, they settled for Bellport and disposed of them 3-0. On November 7th in the county semi-final game they took on Connetquot (2nd Seed), in what was expected to be (and was) a physical and chippy game. Although down 1-0, and confronted with the fact THE TEAM had not come back to win a game this year when faced with a deficit, THE TEAM dug in and squeaked out a more than satisfying 2-1 win. Now, returning to the county finals in itself is a major achievement and on November 11th they did just that against Sachem North. For the people that were unable to attend this game, unfortunately, you missed out on the most memorable 9 minutes of West Islip soccer that has ever been played. Down 2-0 with a little more than 9 minutes remaining in the game, THE TEAM finally scored making it 2-1. With 2 minutes and 35 seconds remaining THE TEAM then put in the equalizer. The West Islip fans were more than happy to be headed for overtime, but THE TEAM was having no part of that this night and with less than 1 second on the clock, West Islip scored the winning goal, winning the Suffolk County Championship for the first time in 20 years and sending them to the Long Island Championship Game. Underdogs throughout the season, why would it be any different against Nassau County Champion and perennial power house Massapequa. Well someone forgot to tell THE TEAM they weren’t suppose to win, hence, regulation and three overtimes later West Islip scored, winning 1-0 and were crowned Long Island Champions. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. THE TEAM headed up to Cortland to play in the NY State semi-final game against defending NY State Champion John Jay (10th ranked team in the nation). Although the girls lost 3-2, it was quite apparent THE TEAM gained much respect from all who witnessed the match, having been down 3-0, not calling it quits and coming within inches of tying up the game. Achievements; Suffolk County Champions, Long Island Champions, NYS semi finalist, 2nd ranked AA school in the state, 45th ranked school in the nation. Not to bad for “Bleak and dreary”. Congrats go out to the coaching staff and all the girls and especially the graduating seniors; Lindsay Aponte, Kate Brandt, Alex Camesas, Shannon Carroll, Ashley Howard, Codi-Lyn Johnson, Deanna Monfredo, Alexis Pilkington, Katie Rotan, Casey Sarle, Mikayla Walton, Erica Wysocki. Award recipients; ALL COUNTY- Codi-Lyn Johnson, Alexis Pilkington, Mikayla Walton, Samantha Whitney. ALL CONFERENCE - Lauren Bellone. ALL COUNTY ACADEMIC - Alex Camesas ALL LEAUGE ACADEMIC - Mikayla Walton |
